An estimated 5,000 Americans are diagnosed with ALS each year. That's one in
every 100,000 people worldwide. As with any disease, despite the statistics,
you always find yourself thinking "It won't happen to me", "It can't affect my
life", and "This is happening somewhere else".
However Josh has reminded us all of our humanity, that it can happen to us, it
does affect our lives, and it's happening right here in Virginia Beach. By now
we know the crippling effects this disease has on the patient and on the
families. Treatment is experimental, drugs almost inaccessible, and care is
incredibly expensive. However, Josh has found a way to fight back against the
disease - the JTWalk, named in his honor, has shattered records for both the
number of walkers bringing the much needed attention to the disease and for the
amount of money raised to help fund research and patient services as well as
other needs. In 2009, money was also raised to fund, and subsequently build,
JT's Grommet Island Beach Park for EveryBODY - the country's first fully
handicapped accessible beach park.
To say that the courage Josh and his family have shown is both humbling and
inspiring would be an understatement. Instead, we are showing our support to
Josh and joining the fight against ALS. Join us - walk with us, donate to the
cause, whatever you feel you can do - but join us. Because Josh, You Can Count
